DENVER – Texas Tech senior forward Jessica Fuston found the back of the net in the 27th minute of play at CIBER Field to push the No. 24 Red Raiders past No. 25 Denver in preseason play Saturday night.
The first-half goal was all the Red Raiders needed as Tech shutout Denver 1-0 in the squad’s lone tune-up before their Aug. 23 season-opener at New Mexico.
Tech’s score came as Fuston, who was third on the squad in scoring last season with five goals, took a cross from sophomore Janine Beckie and punched a header past Pioneer keeper Cassidy Rey.
Tech’s defense took care of the rest as the Red Raiders used both veteran keeper Victoria Esson and redshirt freshman Lauren Watson in front of the net. The Red Raiders allowed just nine Denver shots on the evening, two of which were on goal.
Esson and Watson each recorded one save, with Watson’s coming late in the second half off an Anna Willis shot in the 87th minute the secure the Tech shutout.
Fuston led the Red Raider attack with two shots on the night each coming on goal in the first 30-minutes of play.
The Red Raiders outshot Denver 10-9 on the night – four of Tech’s shots were on goal.
The Red Raiders will travel to New Mexico for the 2013 regular season opener on Friday, Aug. 23 with the home opener set for Aug. 25 against Colorado State at the John Walker Soccer Complex.
