(Lubbock) Every third-grade student at Wheelock, Jackson, Williams and Stewart Elementary Schools was presented a Scholastic Children’s Dictionary by members of the Greater Southwest Rotary Club. About 25 members of the Rotary Club presented the dictionaries to students at the four schools as part of Rotary International’s literacy program. While at the schools, the Rotarians also took time to visit with the students about the importance of an education for lifelong success. With the event occurring on Veteran’s Day, the Rotarians led students in using the dictionaries to look up words like “veteran.” Students were encouraged to write their names in their dictionary and either take it home or keep it for use at school.
According to Randy Laycock, project chairman for the club, Rotarians enjoyed the event as much as the students. “We know literacy is important to each student’s academic success and we want these dictionaries to assist them in becoming familiar with words and their meaning. The best thing was seeing the expressions on the faces of these students when they learned the books were gifts for them to keep.
Rotarians also enjoyed lunch at the school and an update on Lubbock ISD bond projects by Steve Massengale, president of the LISD Board of Trustees.
