SPC Jazz Concert to Feature Singers, Coronado High School Jazz Band

The South Plains College Jazz Concert will feature the SPC Jazz Band, Jazz Singers and special guests during a performance at 7:30 p.m. on Monday (Nov. 25).

LEVELLAND – The South Plains College Jazz Concert will feature the SPC Jazz Band, Jazz Singers and special guests during a performance at 7:30 p.m. on Monday (Nov. 25). The concert, which is free and open to the public, will be held in the Helen DeVitt Jones Theatre for the Performing Arts on the Levelland campus.

 

The concert also will feature the Coronado High School Jazz bands.

 

The SPC Jazz Band is under the direction of Drs. Bruce Keeling, Fine Arts Department chairperson and professor of Music; and John Kennedy, associate professor of Music.

 

The band will perform a wide variety of music from Big Band, blues, driving swing charts to funk. Selections will include Count Basie’s “Blues In Hoss Flat,” Lester Young’s “Lester Leaps In,” Gordon Goodwin’s “Check’s In The Mail,” Stan Kenton’s “ Send In The Clowns” featuring Kennedy on trumpet and the ballad  “Angel Eyes” featuring vocalist Cullan Howe.

 

The SPC Jazz Singers are directed by Dr. Deborah Gelber, instructor in Fine Art. They will perform Irving Berlin’s “Blue Skies,” Cole Porter’s “I’ve Got You Under My Skin,” Billy Joel’s “The Longest Time” and “Christmas Time Is Here.”

 

The Coronado Jazz Bands are under the direction of Danny Timmerman and assisted by Charlie Cross. They will perform jazz standards “Cantaloupe Island,” “Birdland,” “When You Smiling” and feature the trombone section on “Bone Busters” by Mark Taylor. 

 

A reception will follow the concert in the Fine Arts Foyer.
