LUBBOCK, Texas – The No. 23 Texas Tech soccer team suffered its first loss of the 2013 season Sunday night as the Red Raiders fell to Long Beach State 3-2 at the John Walker Soccer Complex.
The 49'ers scored the game-winning goal with just two seconds remaining in regulation to take the lead and snap Tech's three-match winning streak. With the loss, the Red Raiders drop to 3-1-0 on the year while suffering just their second home loss in 15 matches dating back to Oct. 2011.
Long Beach State's game-winner came off the foot of Mimi Rangel as the 49'ers scored two unanswered goals. The two strikes came after Texas Tech freshman Maddy Crabtree gave the Red Raiders a 2-1 lead in the 66th minute of play.
Texas Tech opened the night by taking a 1-0 lead when junior Paige Strahan put the Red Raiders on top in the 35th minute of play off a pass from Crabtree. The pass dropped into the penalty box as Strahan took the feed and punched it into the back of the net for her first score of the season.
Crabtree earned her first career assist on the goal while she led the Red Raider attack on the night with three shots - two of which were on goal.
The 49'ers then tied the match in the opening minute of the second half when Marie MacKenzie found the back of the net scoring the first goal against the Red Raider defense of the 2013 season.
It didn't take long for Tech to respond as Crabtree then answered back with a strike of her own at the 65:32 mark off a long pass from Mallory Yacullo into the 6-yard box to put the Red Raiders on top 2-1. Crabtree ended the weekend with two goals and one assist after netting a goal in Tech's win over Idaho State Friday.
Long Beach State went on score twice including the game-winner as Texas Tech now looks to rebound with two home matches next weekend against both Cal State Fullerton and Cal State Northridge.
