LUBBOCK, Texas– Texas Tech sophomore distance runner Nick Rivera is set to compete on the world stage in the semifinals of the men's 800-meter run at the Pan Am Junior Championships in Medellin, Columbia on Saturday.
Rivera qualified for the meet after winning the U.S. Junior 800-Meter Championship in July. The La Puente, Calif. native crossed the finish line at the U.S. Track and Field Championships in Des Moines with a personal-best time of 1:49.55 and continue his breakout season with the Red Raiders.
In May, Rivera became the first Texas Tech athlete in school history, and first Big 12 athlete since 2008, to sweep the conference indoor and outdoor championship in the event.
The top-8 finishers Saturday advance to the Pan Am Junior Championships finals set for Sunday.
