LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech soccer team took the practice field for the first time in 2013 as the Red Raiders hosted their first official workout of the fall season Wednesday morning.
Tech, which returns eight starters from the 2012 squad that went 16-6-1 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, took the field shortly after 8 a.m. and jumped into a fast-paced practice at the John Walker Soccer Complex.
"It was very competitive and an eye-opener for the newcomers," head coach Tom Stone said. "It's a great starting point."
The Red Raiders welcome 13 newcomers to the program and will be anchored by three returning All-Big 12 First Team selections from 2012 - including All-American sophomore forward Janine Beckie.
Tech returns over 70 percent of its scoring offense, including the top-scoring duo in the Big 12 in Beckie and junior Paige Strahan who combined for 22 goals and 10 game-winners in 2012. Meanwhile, the Tech defense returns the services of senior goalkeeper Victoria Esson and NSCAA All-Central Region defender Jaelene Hinkle
The Red Raiders open the 2013 campaign Aug. 23 at New Mexico and hosts its home opener Aug. 25 against Colorado State at the John Walker Soccer Complex.
