LUBBOCK, TX -- Thursday, TxDOT started getting ready for the first chance for winter road conditions coming this weekend.
The trucks were getting tune ups, and loaded up with road treatment solutions. The crews will begin monitoring the roads in case there is any wintery mix precipitation in the next few days. They will treat roads, especially overpasses and bridges, if there is precipitation.
Dianah Ascencio with TxDOT said during winter weather like this, their crews will work 12 hour shifts to make sure the roads are maintained and safe for drivers.
"Until that weather gets here, it's just, you just never know, so our guys are always prepared. If we need to, then we'll be pre-treating bridges and overpasses, to try to prevent any kind of ice from forming on those structures," Ascencio said.
She also said her advice is if you don't need to be on the road, don't go out. If you do need to go out, take it slow, and give yourself extra time. "Hopefully they'll take their time to get to wherever they're going, be on the look out for our guys. Be sure that they give our guys that room and that space to do their job, because they're out there to try to make the roads as safe as possible for the traveling public," Ascencio said.
If you see any areas of concern, you can call TxDOT to report them, and that number is 806-745-4411. They are in charge of taking care of the Marsha Sharp Freeway, Loop 289, and I-27.
The City of Lubbock is also preparing their streets department to take care of the roads that the city maintains.
