Following Student Cardiac Arrest Episodes, Over 100 Slaton ISD Students Get Heart Screenings

News

Sunday, over 100 Slaton ISD students packed into Lubbock Heart Hospital to receive free heart screenings. The event was hosted by Operation Screen Your Athlete who provided screenings.

The event came after Slaton ISD student Isaac Dabila collapsed while playing with the marching band at a football game September 23. After being rushed to the hospital, Dabila learned he had a preexisting heart condition: Wolff Parkinson White syndrome ( WPW). WPW sends an extra electrical current through his heart, accelatating his heart beats.  After surgery in Fort Worth, Dabila is feeling much better and performing with the marching band again.

Isaac is the second of two Slaton ISD students to suffer from cardiac arrest in the past two years. A year prior, football player Xavier Ramirez collapsed during a game, also because of WPW.

Both Ramirez and Dabila attended the screenings Sunday to encourage their classmates check on their heart health.

“I really love how we all basically came together and are all taking precautions and basically trying to stop this from happening again,” Dabila said. He explained that his sister was being screened on Sunday as well.

“People need to get screened so they wont have the mindset that they’re gonna go down on the football field or something,” Ramirez explained. He said that knowing more about his heart health has allowed him to continue playing football without fear. He wants other parents and students to have that same peace of mind.

Slaton ISD is making a push to  ensure as many of their students as possible are screened for similar conditions.

Operation Screen Your Athlete is offering a public screening for anyone interested on November 12. For more details, email: operationscreenyourathlete@gmail.com
