Auto shops deal with severe weather fallout

KAMC News

When hail comes with severe weather, auto repair shops see customers coming in for help with insurance claims and getting the damage repaired.

For Rufus Martinez, all it took was 20 minutes of being stuck without cover for his vehicle to show signs of damage.

“There wasn’t anywhere to go, I was out in the open and it hailed,” Martinez said.

Martinez said he normally doesn’t drive when there is a storm, but he was waiting in the car while his wife was at the mall and couldn’t go home.

“I don’t know how much hail fell, but it was pretty good size pieces of hail,” Martinez said. “You could hear it banging on the car.”

Now, Martinez and several others are heading to repair shops for everything from body work to complete windshield replacements.

“When we begin work on a vehicle we do have to drop [the] insulator [and] we have to take off these windshield wiper lines,” said Michael Maldonado with Presto Hail Lifters.

Once the repair shop assesses the damage, he said they can help the customer file a claim.

“With damage that people aren’t sure that they have, [once we] inspect it, at that point they can decide whether they want to file a claim or not,” Maldonado said.

Chad Garlington with Collision King said they’re still working on repairs from 2018.

“We had the big storm May 19, we probably did about 400 units within the first few months [and] we’re still working on cars from last May,” Garlington said.

Martinez said his best bet for the next storm is to avoid driving altogether.

“I have a car port and while it’s hailing I’ll keep it in there,” Martinez said.
