Lubbock man Frankie Galicia took on a big eating challenge this weekend. Saturday, he went to Kendall’s Restaurant in Noble, Oklahoma and accomplished the rare feat of eating all the way through the Chicken Fry Challenge.
For the challenge, participants must eat a salad, a “huge” chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes or fries, green beans, a biscuit, and cinnamon rolls in under an hour. Participants must pay $25 to compete and must start eating before 7 p.m. Galicia accomplished all of these things Saturday, beginning the challenge at 11:30 a.m.
Galicia said his strategy was to eat the chicken fried steak first as fast as possible. He prepared by not eating anything except for a small meal the night before.
“What helped me is that my wife is a registered CNA and what she says is what’s gonna help you here is that your body doesn’t know you’ve eaten anything within 20 minutes from your first bite, so the faster you eat the faster you can get more into you,” Galicia explained.
Galacia said he completed the challenge in 46 minutes and was completely stuffed afterward.
Kendall’s restaurant co-owner Kim Lock said Sunday that while hundreds have attempted this challenge in the last 20+ years, only 28 have completed it successfully as of Saturday night.
“It goes in spurts but it is rare,” Lock said of the challenge.
For winning this challenge, Galicia gets bragging rights as well as a free t-shirt and meal. Galicia did the Chicken Fry Challenge after a friend on Facebook challenged him to. But this is not his first time completing an impressive eating challenge.
Galicia also proudly completed the 72 oz. Steak Challenge at the Big Texan in Amarillo. That challenge entails eating a 72 oz steak, one shrimp cocktail, a baked potato, salad, and a roll with butter. This challenge also must be completed in an hour and those who complete it will have their $72 steak refunded.
Galicia hopes to take on more eating contests in the future.
“It was something I never thought I would be able to accomplish and stuff like that but once you accomplish something like that you’re ready for something else and it just moves you forward, it completely moves you forward in every way,” he said.
