Man shot and killed by homeowner in attempted burglary, police confirm


A man trying to burglarize vehicles and homes was shot by a homeowner on Wednesday, according to police. He later died, they said. 

Police responded to reports of shots fired in the 3500 block of 38th Street just before 10:00 in the evening. When they arrived, they found a man who had been shot once. 

The man was transported to UMC with serious injuries but later died at the hospital, they said.

Police later released the name of the man who died. He was identified as Oliver Perez, 43.

Police released the following statement Thursday morning: 

LPD METRO Unit investigating shooting

(LUBBOCK, TX) – Lubbock Police were called to the 3500 block of 38th street, just before 10:00 p.m., on Wednesday, December 26th, following reports of shots fired.

Upon arrival, officers located 43 year-old Oliver Perez with a gunshot wound. Perez was transported to UMC with serious injuries. He was later pronounced deceased at the hospital.

Information obtained through the initial course of the investigation indicate Perez was attempting to burglarize vehicles and homes in the area when he was shot by a homeowner.

At this time, no arrests have been made. An investigation by LPD’s METRO unit is on-going.

Investigators are asking residents in this area who believe they may have caught any suspicious video on camera overnight to send that video to the department’s Facebook page (@LubbockPD) via messenger.
