MedMinute: Hand-washing at the hospital


Children of mothers who had gestational diabetes are nearly twice as likely to develop diabetes before the age of 22, compared to children of moms who did not have the condition. Canadian researchers tracked over 73,000 mothers and their children.

A new study found antibiotic-resistant bacteria live on the hands of 14% of hospital patients and what those patients are touching. Michigan researchers said hospitals have focused on hand hygiene for nurses and doctors, but suggested patients need the training, too.

Medicaid could save more than 2 1/2 billion dollars within a year if just 1% of recipients quit smoking, according to a new study from the University of California San Francisco. Nearly a quarter of all Medicaid recipients smoke.
