LUBBOCK, Texas– It was a relaxing day at the pool at the Park East Apartments, until gun shots broke out in the pool area filled with hundreds of people on Saturday. Many of those people were Texas Tech students and witnessed the entire incident.
“We were chilling. Nothing going on, no arguments, no confrontations,” said a sophomore and resident of the complex. She asked that her identity be kept private. “All of a sudden we hear three gun shots.”
According to police, it appeared there was an altercation between several people at the apartment complex pool. The altercation escalated and at some point the suspect, 24-year-old Asia Jackson pulled out a gun and fired multiple shots, striking the two victims.
Those victims were 19-year-old John Scott and 19-year-old Kiana Pipkins, who were taken to the hospital to be treated for their injuries, according to police. Scott is a redshirt freshman defensive lineman on the football team.
“We see them carrying a girl out. She has blood running down her stomach and leg,” said another resident, and senior at TTU.
“He was on the couch kneeling. Everyone was around him and there was blood,” said the sophomore.
The senior added that multiple people fled the building, almost trampling her in their path. Following that, she saw the argument continue among a large group of people outside of the apartment complex.
“Then, we see what is suspected to be the shooter come out and fight someone else,” she said. “Then, twenty, thirty, forty, maybe fifty guys started fighting in the fire lane. As soon as the cops came everyone darted,” she said.
On Sunday, police said, 24-year-old Asia Jackson turned himself in to Lubbock police. Jackson had an outstanding arrest warrant for aggravated assault in connection to the shooting at Park East Apartments that sent two people to the hospital.
“There were so many people. I didn’t know where to go. I was just trying to get out. It was kind of traumatizing to see,” said the sophomore.
