On Saturday June 3rd, the “Hope Over Dope” organization hosted an event with several different resources for those struggling with addiction. The organization was founded by Erica Mergel, who said she was inspired to start it because of her past with addiction.
“I have a history of addiction and I have a history of family addiction as well. This was just something that was placed in my heart to do here in Lubbock,” Mergel said.
The event had several different churches and sober home organizations present to reach out to those looking for help. Mergel said the only way to fight drug and alcohol abuse in Lubbock is for all the organizations to work together.
“We have found there is a division amongst the organizations who are struggling with addiction. The problem is getting really serious here in Lubbock and people need resources because when you’re an addict and you lose everything you can’t pay for certain things and certain services,” Mergel said.
Joe Nervis, who said he used to be an addict, but is now ten years sober, believes this group really brings support to struggling addicts right now.
“This program right here is a lot of ex drug addicts and ex drug dealers but these people are bonded but now they are free,” Nervis said.
