LUBBOCK, Texas — Lubbock Police officers went door-to-door Wednesday delivering Meals on Wheels to more than 800 recipients all throughout the city limits. It’s part of their “Police Week” initiative to show the public a different side to law enforcement officers.
“Too often people see just a uniform, but this is what we love to do,” said Sergeant Steve Bergen. “Connecting with our community members, seeing how their day is, that’s why we do what we do.”
Officers went on 59 different routes to deliver the meals. While most recipients said they were not expecting an officer at their door, the reception was mostly positive.
“A lot of them looked a little shocked at first, but then we would laugh, and it all turned out okay,” Bergen said. “We all had a really good laugh and look forward to doing it again next year.”
Meals on Wheels is a volunteer service to provide read-to-eat food for those who cannot leave home or have trouble leaving home to get food.
