Texas Tech student wins Grammys

KLBK News

One Texas Tech student had a night to remember as she and others were awarded two Grammys for their work on “American Dreamers: Voices of Hope, Music of Freedom.”

Saba Nafees, a Ph.D candidate at Texas Tech, was awarded two Grammys at the award show on Sunday, February 10.

“About a year and a half ago I was called to be a part of this jazz album,” Nafees said. “The producers on the album found me and the rest of the dreamers.”

Nafees said she sang and played piano on the album, but their message was bigger than the music.

“Many of us are involved in advocacy and educating others and talking about the political atmosphere,” Nafees said. “But this time it was beautiful because we got together because of just music.”

Nafees said after finding out they were nominated for a Grammy, she and ten dreamers traveled to Los Angeles for the award show.

“It was really a great experience and something that all of us will cherish forever,” Nafees said.

Nafees said when she moved to the United States at 11-years-old she was unsure of how life would look, and it still feels that way, but she is not letting that stop her from achieving her dreams.

“Just go out there and achieve your dreams,” Nafees said. “No one can stop you especially because you are in this beautiful country that will give you all the opportunities you will ever want.”

If you are interested in learning more about Nafees and her story, the local PBS station is producing a documentary on her life that will be showing on Thursday, February 21. You can purchase tickets at the link below.
