Texas Rangers were called on Monday to assist the Cochran County Sheriff’s Office with a “questionable death” investigation.

The Texas Department of Public Safety said a passerby discovered the body of a dead man in a remote area about 3 miles southwest of Morton.

“Due to the evidence at the scene, investigators believe the body had been in place for several weeks,” DPS said.

The Cochran County Judge ordered an autopsy which was scheduled for Wednesday in Lubbock.

“Positive identification of the body and cause of death are pending medical examiner findings,” DPS said.
