A specially called grand jury on Thursday indicted Xavier Garcia, 21, for capital murder.  Garcia was already in jail for murder related to the death of Katrina Castillo, 20, on February 5 in the 4200 block of East 2nd Street.

The medical examiner’s office said in February that the cause of death was “multiple sharp force injuries,” and the manner of death was homicide.

The indictment said it was capital murder (not just murder) because Garcia killed Castillo “in the course of committing or attempting to commit the offense of kidnapping…”  It also said this was a capital murder case because Garcia killed Castillo “in the course of committing or attempting to commit the offense of robbery….”

The indictment did not say what was stolen in the “offense of robbery,” but Garcia was found after the murder in Castillo’s car.

Both the original arrest warrant and the new indictment said Garcia killed Castillo by stabbing her.

“Xavier Garcia was then interviewed and subsequently admitted to causing the death of Katrina Castillo and provided details that were consistent with the evidence found at the scene…,” the arrest warrant in February said.

As of Thursday, Garcia was held in the Lubbock County Detention Center on a $350,000 bond.

It’s not Garcia’s first brush with the law. In 2017, Garcia was arrested for aggravated assault.  He was accused at that time of putting the barrel of a gun in a woman’s mouth.

It turned out to be a replica gun.  Garcia took a plea agreement in that case.

A search warrant also listed Garcia as possibly having some involvement in the January murder of Kmydron Jordan.
