An Abernathy man was taken to University Medical Center Sunday morning after his vehicle was struck by a train, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety. 

The accident occurred around 5:00 a.m. at U.S. Highway 84 and Farm-to-Market Road 1585, between Lubbock and Slaton.

DPS said the Nissan SUV was stuck by a westbound train while attempting to cross the railroad track.

The driver of the SUV, identified as Mark Anthony Pando, 20, suffered incapacitating injuries.

A spokesman for University Medical Center told EverythingLubbock.com Mr. Pando is currently listed in serious condition. 

The engineer and conductor on the train were not injured.
