The following is a news release from the Lubbock Police Department:
At approximately 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, Lubbock police officers responded to the area of Erskine Street and North Loop 289 for a crash involving a SUV and a male on a bicycle.
Based on information gathered at the scene it appears the SUV was traveling eastbound on Erskine. The driver attempted to swerve to miss the bicyclist traveling southbound on the crosswalk but was unsuccessful and struck the bike.
The 55-year-old bicyclist was taken by EMS to University Medical Center with serious injuries.
At this time it appears the bicyclist had a red light and failed to yield the right of way to traffic on Erskine.
