Joey Lee Hernandez, 34, on Monday accepted a federal plea deal for failure to register as a sex offender.

Court records said Hernandez was convicted in 2014 under two counts of the Uniform Code of Military Justice for sexual abuse of a child.  In October of 2017, Hernandez registered with Lubbock police as living at a particular address in Central Lubbock.

In April, U.S. Marshals found him and confronted him about not keeping his registration up to date.  He admitted that he did not realize he had to update his registration quarterly.  But he also admitted he took a job in Hobbs and had not registered that job with officials in New Mexico.

“Hernandez admits he knowingly failed to register…” court records said.

Hernandez will be sentenced at a later date.  Under the terms of the plea, the maximum sentence would be 10 years.

(Note: Court records do not indicate his status as in custody or out of custody. He was not listed Tuesday in the Lubbock Co. Detention Center)
