The New Deal Lions lost to the Mason Punchers in Arlington at the Class 2A Division I football state championship. The game was Thursday in AT&T Stadium.

The final score was 44 – 6.

On the opening drive, Mason’s Zack Norman made a 35-yard catch to get the Punchers down to the 1-yard line.  Mason took a 7 – 0 lead on the opening drive over New Deal.

On the next possession, New Deal then turned over the ball with an interception, but the defense held, and Mason had to punt.  The snap went badly, and New Deal recovered at Mason’s 11-yard line.

On a 3rd down pass to Kendell Dunn, New Deal scored, but the PAT failed.  With 3:43 in the first quarter, Mason led 7 – 6 over New Deal.

Mason, on the ensuing drive, scored on a run from Klay Klaerner.  By a score of 14 – 6 Mason led with just less than 3:00 minutes left in the first quarter.

On the first play after the kickoff return, a 27-yard run by Jett Whitfield put New Deal into Mason territory.  Dunn, with a play-action pass, got down to the 15.  But the Mason defense held, and on 4th and 17 yards to go, the first play of the second quarter, a pass fell way short of the first down.

Mason took over at their own 16.

During the drive, the New Deal defense came close to making a stop.  Mason had to overcome 4th down and 3 yards to go at the 18.  They did overcome it and went on to score.  Mason led 21 – 6 with just more than 3:00 minutes left in the half.

On 3rd and 20 in Mason territory, New Deal threw an interception to Tyson Keller.  The Punchers took over at their own 47.

Mason drove down to the New Deal 11 with just 0:07 seconds left in the half.  Mason’s Kyle Montoya kicked a field goal to make it 24 – 6 at the half.

On the opening drive of the second half, New Deal, after a 3-and-out, punted from Lion’s 32-yard line.

The Punchers on their first drive started at their own 25 and drove down for the score including a 55-yard touchdown run by Jake Cockerham.  The PAT was good, and Mason led by a score of 31 – 6.

The next possession was not what the Lions wanted.  They had to punt from near their own goal.  The Punchers took over at the New Deal 45-yard line.

From there, the Punchers drove down inside the New Deal 10. Klaerner ran it in 9 yards for the touchdown.  The point-after was no good, making the score 37 – 6 with about 2-and-a-half minutes left in the third quarter.

New Deal player D.K. Blaylock was injured during the Puncher’s drive.

New Deal went 3-and-out in the next possession.

The Punchers then drove down and ultimately scored on a 6-yard run.  Early in the 4th, Mason led by a score of 44 – 6

New Deal would fake a punt on the next possession near mid field.  The pass was dropped on the fake punt, which led to the Punchers taking over at the 48-yard line of New Deal.

The Punchers used the ensuing drive to take as much time off the clock as possible.  The drive ended with Montoya missing a field goal for the Punchers.

New Deal got the ball back with roughly 2:00 minutes left in the game.  The Lions were able to reach into Mason territory on their final drive, but the outcome was set.
