On Thursday, August 3rd, a new High intensity Activated crossWalK (HAWK) pedestrian crossing beacon will be activated at the intersection of 50th Street and Avenue P near Hodges Elementary School. This new HAWK beacon will facilitate safer pedestrian crossing with minimal motorist delay.
The vehicular indications facing traffic on 50th Street are dark until a pedestrian activates the system. Drivers are cautioned with flashing yellow indications that a pedestrian is intending to cross the street. Steady yellow indications followed by steady red indications require drivers to stop for crossing pedestrians. Flashing red indications then allow drivers to proceed after yielding to all pedestrians within the crosswalk. During the flashing red interval, every driver must come to a complete stop behind the marked stop line and yield to all pedestrians before proceeding.
Pedestrians are reminded to only cross when the walk symbol is lit and to always watch for vehicles.
More information including an illustration explaining the HAWK beacon sequence can be found on the City of Lubbock Traffic Engineering website ( http://traffic.mylubbock.us ).
