Both a police statement and a police report describe a shootout on Monday afternoon between Ray Delano, 46, and the older married couple in the 9000 block of Avenue P.

The police report said Delano was repairing a fence on his property when Sonja Renfro drove up in a pickup truck.  There had been a dispute over the property line, according to the police report.

“[Mrs. Renfro] intentionally, knowingly, or recklessly hit [the victim] with her listed vehicle,” the police report said.

The police report then said Delano pulled out a gun and shot at her windshield.  She backed up, pulled out a gun and shot at him.

Mr. Renfro heard gunshots from inside his home, and came outside with a shotgun.  He then started firing at Delano.  Delano returned fire on Mr. Renfro, according to the police report.

Delano was hit by the shotgun.  The police press release said Delano was treated for his gunshot wound and has since been released from a Lubbock hospital.

Bond was set for both at $10,000.  Deadly conduct was listed on their booking sheets as a third degree felony.

The following is a press release from the Lubbock Police Department:

Last night [Tuesday night], at approximately 7:30 p.m., 75-year-old Sonja Renfro and 70-year-old James Renfro were arrested and charged with deadly conduct in connection to the shooting in the 9000 block of Avenue P.

On August 20th, detectives with the Lubbock Police Department Persons Crimes Unit were called to the area for reports of multiple shots fired between neighbors.

It appears there has been an ongoing dispute over a property line between the two neighboring households. On Monday, the altercation escalated and shots were fired by both parties. One of the neighbors, 46-year-old Ray Delano, was struck during the altercation. He was taken to the hospital for his injuries and released the same day.

On Tuesday, detectives presented the case to the District Attorney’s Office and warrants were issued for Sonja and James Renfro. The couple was arrested at their home without incident and booked into the Lubbock County Detention Center.
