The following is a press release from the Lubbock Police Department:

Two people, 19-year-old Anthony Alvarez and 22-year-old Miguel Garza, are now in custody charged with murder in connection to the fatal shooting of 41-year-old Jimmy Hernandez Rodriguez.

On January 16th at approximately 4 p.m., the Lubbock Police Department received multiple calls reporting shots fired in the 1500 block of 37th Street. Officers located Rodriguez lying on the ground with life threatening injuries. He was taken by EMS to the hospital where he was later pronounced deceased.

Multiple LPD officers and investigators with the Metro Special Crimes Unit arrived on scene to immediately begin an investigation and quickly learned the suspect was possibly driving a gold SUV. Moments later, officers received reports that a gold SUV matching the suspect’s vehicle had just been reported stolen from the 1900 block of East 1st Place.

A little more than an hour after the shooting, Lubbock Texas Anti-Gang Center investigators located the stolen gold SUV in the 4600 block of Interstate-27 and detained the occupant, Miguel Garza.

Throughout the night, detectives continued to gather information about the shooting and identified Garza and Alvarez as the suspects. At this time, it appears the suspects knew the victim and confronted him while he was walking in the area of 37th Street and Avenue P. During the confrontation, it is believed Garza fired multiple shots at Rodriguez and then fled the area.

Arrest warrants were issued for Garza and Alvarez. By early Thursday morning, both were booked into the Lubbock County Detention Center on murder charges.

This case remains under investigation by the joint LPD and LSO Metro Special Crimes Unit.
