Programs at Texas Tech University to host 2021 summer camps

LUBBOCK, Texas (NEWS RELEASE) — The following is a news release from Texas Tech University:

Multiple departments at Texas Tech University offer summer camps for students to learn about various subjects. These camps also give campers the opportunity to explore and discover what a college campus has to offer.

College Connect (ariana.hernandez@ttu.edu)

Camp tuitions are due in full by May 31.

  • Shake Hands With Your Future
    • This camp allows young women to explore university life as well as choose and attend classes taught by field professionals in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM); visual performing and fine arts. It offers interactive learning activities, while also incorporating challenging concepts for discussion.
    • Grades 7-9: July 25-29
    • Grades 10-12: July 11-15
    • Cost: $800
  • Generation TECH
    • The Generation TECH camp allows for exploration by high school students to consider renewable energy technologies as a future academic pursuit. Participants will gain skills through hands-on learning needed to thrive in a career involving renewable energy. Activities and topics covered during the camp include wind and solar energy, building a wind turbine and concepts of solar panel design.
    • Grades 9-12: July 18-22
    • Cost: $800

Chess (texastechchess@ttu.edu)

  • Summer Chess Camp
    • The camp will consist of chess lessons and tournaments for students at different skill levels. There also will be sports breaks and special activities each day.
    • Ages 7-18
      • Session 1: 9 a.m. to noon June 21-25
      • Session 2: 9 a.m. to noon July 19-23
    • Cost: $125

Registration may be completed on the museum’s website but will close the Friday before the start of each camp. Due to social distancing guidelines, a maximum of 10 children will be accepted for each camp.

  • Summer in Color
    • Students will learn about different art techniques, art tools and artists while getting hands-on experience, expressing their artistic sides and creating take-home pieces.
    • Ages 4-6
      • Session 1: 10 a.m. to noon July 6-8
      • Session 2: 10 a.m. to noon July 27-29
    • Cost: $100
  • Drawing Basics
    • Learn about the materials and basic techniques to get started with drawing. We will learn about lines, shading and texture using graphite pencils. All materials are provided and may be taken home at the end of the camp.
    • Ages 12-14: 2-4 p.m. July 6-9
    • Ages 15-18: 2-4 p.m. July 13-16
    • Cost: $100
  • Around the Campfire
    • Get ready for a summer experience inspired by camping and the great outdoors. This session will focus on crafts, games and activities within the museum that highlight elements of nature, animals and some of the exciting adventures camping has to offer.
    • Ages 7-9
      • Session 1: 10 a.m. to noon July 13-15
      • Session 2: 10 a.m. to noon Aug. 3-5
    • Cost: $100
  • Maker’s Studio
    • This camp incorporates math, science, history and art into hands-on, do-it-yourself activities, crafts and games.
    • Ages 10-13
      • Session 1: 10 a.m. to noon July 20-22
      • Session 2: 10 a.m. to noon Aug. 10-12
    • Cost: $100
  • Drawing Beyond the Basics
    • Build on the basic skills through applications of texture, line and shading while also learning about form and perspective. We will draw animal forms displayed in the exhibit, “Biodiversity of the Llano Estacado.”
      • Ages 12-14: 2-4 p.m. July 20-22
      • Ages 15-18: 2-4 p.m. July 27-30
    • Cost: $100

  • Child Development Research Center STEAM Camp
    • This camp will give participants a chance to learn about the world through an integrated science, technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM) approach. Attendees will experience STEAM topics through creative, hands-on activities including a variety of art projects.
    • Ages: 5-8, having completed kindergarten: July 12-16
    • Cost: $250
  • Financial Planning Academy (hs.pfp.fpacademy@ttu.edu)
    • This camp includes a fun-filled week of virtual events designed to help high school students deepen their understanding of personal finance and the profession of financial planning. It will allow them to interact with financial experts from across the country while developing skills in leadership, communication, team-building, entrepreneurship, marketing and more.
    • Grades 9-12: 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 28-July 2
    • Cost: $50

  • Youth Summer Camp
    • This camp includes a variety of activities that focus on ensuring active participation, including rock climbing, team sports and archery.
    • Ages 7-12
      • Session 1: 8 a.m. to noon June 7-18
      • Session 2: 8 a.m. to noon June 21-July 2
    • Cost: $250

  • TTU ART PRE-College Immersion Program 2021
    • This is an academic camp that will provide students the opportunity to make two-and three-dimensional art. Students will mount an art exhibition at the end of the week.
    • Session 1: June 14-18
    • Session 2: June 21-25
    • Cost: $450

  • All-State Choir Camp
    • This camp allows high school choir students to receive an introduction to the Texas All-State audition music. Grades 9-12: June 15-19
    • Cost: Contact the School of Music for the cost of the camp.
  • Band and Orchestra Camp
    • This camp is for high school and middle school students to learn band, orchestra or drum major tracks.
    • Grades 6-12: July 4-10
    • Cost:
      • Overnight campers: $670

  • Science in the Sun
    • This day camp offers a hands-on, outdoor science learning adventure.

  • Theatre Camp
    • This camp allows students to audition, rehearse and perform in a one-act play at the Maedgen Theatre. Classes include movement, diction, characterization, makeup and auditioning.
