The university is prepared to offer multiple in-person ceremonies to properly adhere to social-distancing guidelines.

LUBBOCK, Texas — The following is a news release from Texas Tech University.

Texas Tech University announced today (Oct. 21) that it is changing up its normal commencement schedule to offer both in-person and virtual commencement ceremonies for December 2020 graduates. In order to accommodate social distancing, the university is prepared to offer multiple in-person ceremonies.

The in-person ceremonies are scheduled for Dec. 11-12 and will include numerous modifications to accommodate social-distancing restrictions. Attendance will be restricted to graduates and a limited number of family and friends.

The decision is the culmination of a combined, coordinated effort between multiple offices and groups within Texas Tech, including the Student Government Association. Administrators said they will remain in contact with local health authorities to ensure the safety of each ceremony.

“Commencement is a special moment in the academic careers of our students and their families, and we spent a considerable amount of time carefully planning a safe in-person option to allow our students the opportunity to participate in a traditional ceremony,” said Lawrence Schovanec, Texas Tech president. “After much consideration by various University offices and students, we have decided to hold two types of commencement ceremonies for our fall graduates – in-person and virtual.”

The virtual commencement ceremony is scheduled for Dec. 19. All December graduates, including those who attend an in-person commencement, will be included in the virtual ceremony.

If circumstances allow, the university plans to host in-person ceremonies for the May and August 2020 graduates sometime in 2021. More information will be released on the university’s commencement website in the coming days.
