The following is a news release from Texas Tech University:

Student Disability Services is hosting Disability Awareness Week starting Monday (Oct. 1) to celebrate the diversity of students with disabilities and raise awareness for programs and services available to those students at Texas Tech University.

The main event for the week is an art gallery titled “Creative Abilities” that will be on display for the First Friday Art Trail at 6 p.m. Friday (Oct. 5) at the Christine DeVitt IceHouse Gallery, directly behind the Louise Hopkins Underwood Center for the Arts (LHUCA). Students who identify with having a disability will display and perform art as part of the exhibit.

Many students have chosen to donate their art for sale and the proceeds will go directly to the Alex C. Watkins Memorial Scholarship Endowment at Texas Tech. Scholarship awards from the Watkins scholarship benefits students with any area of disability, in area of study and are registered with Student Disability Services office.

Student artists determine the price of the art, which can be purchased at the event. The entire community can also help promote the success of students with disabilities at Texas Tech by contributing to the Alex C. Watkins Memorial Scholarship Fund while attending the art show, or online.

“The art gallery creates an opportunity where students are able to support each other, and possibly themselves, by donating art and understanding the importance of giving back,” said Larry Phillippe, director of Student Disability Services.

Students also are invited to participate in Deaf Bingo, which will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday (Oct. 3) in the Wall/Gates Residence Hall.

The community can share their experiences using the #TTUDAW18 hashtag online.
