World-famous Peggy Sue of Lubbock dies at age 78

Peggy Sue Gerron-Rockham passed away Monday morning, according to University Medical Center.  

Better known as just Peggy Sue, she was the inspiration for Buddy Holly’s 1957 hit song “Peggy Sue.”  She also was the inspiration for a follow-up song in 1959, “Peggy Sue Got Married.” 

In 2008, she released a book called “Whatever Happened to Peggy Sue?” Holly’s widow, Maria Elena Holly, tried to stop publication of the book.

Holly and Peggy Sue were both from Lubbock.  Peggy Sue died at the age of 78.  Holly died in a plane crash in 1959.

UMC spokesperson Eric Finley confirmed Peggy Sue died at 11:11 a.m. Monday.
