David Augustus-Cantu accepted a plea deal Friday for transfer of obscene material to a minor.  Court records Augustus-Cantu, now age 23, was 22 at the time he had a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old girl.

“Cantu was a volunteer youth leader at a church that Jane Doe was attending,” court records said.  The relationship began during a church camp in July of 2018.

A mom called Lubbock police to report sexual relationship between Augustus-Cantu and her daughter.

Police found text messages on Augustus-Cantu’s phone.  In those messages, the girl warns him, “You could lose everything …. [and] go to jail.”

She asks, “What if I get pregnant?”

“I don’t want to ruin your life,” she wrote him.

Court records said, when questioned, the girl admitted to oral sex with Augustus-Cantu. In addition to the text messages, police found that Cantu sent the girl an inappropriate image.

Under the terms of the plea deal, Augustus-Cantu faces no more than 10 years in prison.  First, a judge or a magistrate must approve the deal.  Then Augustus-Cantu will be sentenced at a later date.
