An Abilene mother and her two young children tested positive for drugs after a fatal crash.
April Cortez, 30, was taken into custody Tuesday and charged with Endangering a Child. She was released from jail after posting a $5,000 bond.
Court documents state the drug tests were conducted during an investigation into a rollover wreck that killed Cortez’s 7-year-old son in July of 2017.
An autopsy revealed the 7-year-old had methamphetamine and amphetamine in her bloodstream, and Cortez’s 1-year-old son tested positive for cocaine and marijuana during a drug test in August of 2017, according to the documents.
A hair-follicle test performed on Cortez, also in August of 2017, showed positive results for methamphetamine, cocaine, and marijuana.
The documents state Cortez claimed she had no idea why her children tested positive for drugs but did confirm they were in her care.
