Clovis man sentenced to 19 years on child abuse charge

CLOVIS, N.M. (PRESS RELEASE) — The following is a press release from the New Mexico Ninth Judicial District Attorney’s Office. 

Ninth Judicial District Attorney, Andrea Reeb, announced that today Jackie Cubit, age 32, of Clovis, pleaded guilty to First Degree Child Abuse Causing Great Bodily Harm.  The case was originally scheduled for a two-day trial this week.

In November of 2017, Cubit and his wife got into an argument. Cubit threw a glass jar candle at his wife and missed, hitting their infant daughter in the head. The infant suffered a subdural hematoma and had to be airlifted to Lubbock, TX for medical treatment.

The Honorable Matthew Chandler sentenced Cubit to 19 years in the Department of Corrections. The sentence included a one year enhancement for a prior felony conviction. 

Claire Adams, Assistant District Attorney, prosecuted the case for the State. William D. Grieg, of Albuquerque,  represented Cubit.
