AMARILLO, TX (PRESS RELEASE) — Xcel Energy continues to get reports of scammers contacting customers in Texas and New Mexico threatening to disconnect power service if payment isn’t made over the phone.

This type of criminal activity tends to pick up before special family days such as Mother’s Day.

Last year several florists reported scam calls as they neared their Mother’s Day rush, and one florist in Amarillo reported a scam attempt today. Scammers also are known to prey on restaurants at busy hours.

As a reminder, Xcel Energy customers who are behind on their bills will always receive a printed disconnect notice in the mail first. Anyone receiving calls who has not received a printed disconnect notice should assume it is a scam, hang up, and contact Xcel Energy to verify account balances. If payments are due, customers can make arrangements through the appropriate means.

Business customers can contact Xcel Energy at 1-800-481-4700. Residential customers should call 1-800-895-4999. More information and tips to avoid scams can be found at https://www.xcelenergy.com/
