WACO, Texas - Former Texas Tech quarterback Joe Barnes was among the nine inductees into the Southwest Conference Hall of Fame announced by the Texas Sports Hall of Fame on Tuesday.
Barnes led the Red Raiders to an 11-1 record and a Gator Bowl win over Tennessee in 1973. The all-SWC quarterback finished with 2,330 passing yards, 1,321 rushing yards and 28 touchdowns in his Texas Tech career. Barnes went onto have a 11-year career in the Canadian Football League and was inducted into Texas Tech's Hall of Fame in 1986.
The 2018 SWC Hall of Fame class also includes Arkansas All-American Steve Atwater, Baylor's Tommy Bowman, Houston's Larry Micheux, former Rice women's track & field coach Victor Lopez, SMU's Denny Holman, Texas' Brooks Kieschnick, Texas A&M's Curtis Dickey and TCU's Kurt Thomas.
The 2018 induction class will be enshrined during a luncheon on September 10, 2018 in Fort Worth.
